Soccer Referee Update Information
This blog reports on the consolidation of soccer referee grades into license levels. In 2020, as of July 1, 2019, U.S. Soccer will cancel its nine-grade referee program. In its place, a new five-license program will be in effect.
The new framework aims to streamline the progression of referees as they
advance in skill and experience. The consolidation of soccer
referee
grades into license levels does not undermine the
skillset nor does it detract from the quality of the match.
The referee should not worry about losing credit or clout. They should
not find themselves assigned to less games because of the program change.
This was the result of a multi-year review of the referee landscape. The
study was conducted by U.S. Soccer, alongside its various members. This
new Referee Pathway not only provides a clearer understanding on the process to
become a referee, but it also creates more opportunities for referee
participation and development.
Starting in July, U.S. Soccer will release a series of profiles for referees’
at all five stages of the pathway. The new pathway license levels are based off
of these profiles, created by U.S. Soccer and its members. This is great news
according to the players using a soccer
rebounder on the field; they’re happy about it.
Alongside the release
of the new Referee Pathway, U.S. Soccer will launch a new Grassroots Online
Referee Course on the U.S. Soccer Learning Center. For more details on this,
please browse www.fold-a-goal.com.
These resources will better support referees on the field as well as referee
administrators off the field.
Referees will be able
to create free profiles within the Learning Center and State Referee Committees
can use the Learning Center as an administrative tool at no cost.
